5 ways to boat safely this summer

With warmer days ahead, many boaters will be heading out on the lake for the first time this season. According to the U.S Coast Guard, In 2021:

  • 81% of fatal bloating accident victims drowned. Of those drowning victims, 83% were not wearing a life jacket. *
  • Alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. *
  • There were 188 accidents in which at least one person was struck by a propeller. Collectively, these accidents resulted in 24 deaths and 191 injuries. *

Being safe on the water is everyone’s responsibility. Before you head out on the water, considered the following tips:

  1. Wear your life jacket and make sure that it fits properly. Safe Boating Campaign has tons of great information on how to make sure your life jacket fits properly, that it is cared for correctly and that you know how to read your life jacket label.
  2. Take a boaters safety class. It never hurts to get a refresher course on boat safety. The best way to find a class in your area, or online is to visit Michigan.gov.
  3. Know the law. During your boater’s safety class, you will review Michigan boat laws. This will help keep you and those on your boat protected.
  4. Keep your boat up to date. Just as you would your car, be sure to check that your boat has been serviced and is ready for its first voyage!
  5. Pay attention. Boat sober and be considerate of others on the water. Remember boats don’t have breaks and being alert could save you or someone you love from being seriously injured or even death.
