Holiday Safety – Preventing a Christmas Tree Fire
According to the NFPA, there are nearly 1,000 home fires started by holiday decorations or Christmas trees each year. Nearly 1 in 5 Christmas tree fires were started by lamps or bulbs. Eight percent of fires were started by candles. To keep your home safe, here are a few tips:
- Make sure the tree is at least 3ft away from any heat source, such as fireplaces, candles, heating vents or lamps.
- Be sure to add water daily to your tree.
- Only use lights labeled as approved by nationally recognized laboratories (like UL, CSA and ETL) and without damage such as broken sockets, frayed wires or loose connections. If a string of lights is found in such condition, it's time to toss it. Also remember that LED lights could be the best option; they run cooler, use less energy and last longer than traditional lights.
- Replace string of lights with any worn or broken cords.
- Never use candles to decorate a tree.
- Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving the home or going to bed.
- Be prompt about disposing your tree.
