How to Pick the Perfect Christmas Tree
Michigan ranks third in the nation for the number of Christmas trees harvested, supplying approximately 2 million fresh Christmas trees to the national market each year! Our state has approximately 37,000 acres in commercial Christmas tree production, producing more than 9 varieties of trees, which is more than any other state! With so many trees to choose from, how does one find the perfect tree? Here are a few tips:
Before you pick out a tree, determine where the tree will go in your home. Try to avoid heat sources likes fireplaces and heating vents. It is also good to find an area of your home that doesn’t get a lot of traffic to avoid branches from being bumped. It is also a good idea to measure the space beforehand so you know how big of a tree you can get.
As we mentioned, Michigan produces over 9 varieties of Christmas trees. So, before you go shopping it is good to determine what kind of tree you’d like. The most popular tree is the Douglas Fir, offering a strong scent as well as a full form look. If you have a lot of ornaments, you might prefer White Spruce. They are known for it’s short, stiff, and strong needles that can help secure ornaments. If you are unsure on which type of tree you might like for your home, here is an article that can help.
Look for a fresh tree! To check if the tree is ‘fresh’, check the trunk of the tree. A fresh tree’s trunk should have stickiness to it. You can also gently grab a branch and pull your hand gently towards you. If the tree is fresh, the needles shouldn’t fall off.
